Howards Old Thinking
John claimed on Lateline last night that Solar and renewables cannot generate base load power.
Apparently he hasn’t heard of the Snowy Hydro. Hmm.
He repeatedly claimed that it was the view of both him and a “number of scientists” that solar and other technologies cannot provide the level of base load power required to run our cities.
Its not about providing base load power you dolt. Its about decentralising the power generation system. Creating small local power generation projects whereever possible, whether its a small hydro project to power a local suburb, or power generation in the home via solar. The beauty of renewables is that they work on both a very small and very large scale. But the advantage of doing them on a small scale is that they become very very efficient at delivering power because you are using the power in the same location as it is generated.
So long as politicians like Howard are around who neither understand or want to understand that a renewables target can realistically be achieved, then Australia will continue to accept that fossil fuel is king.
If you encourage many local renewable energy projects then guess what? The base load you require from larger renewable projects becomes a much more realistic target to achieve.
Sitting back and claiming the base load is too high, and therefore its not worth bothering is shortsighted and lazy.
